What the midweek match means for Ajax Cape Town

Ajax Cape Town will not be in action this midweek, but they will still keep a close eye on developments in the only Absa Premiership match of the week.

This sees Mamelodi Sundowns play a catch-up game when they host Bloemfontein Celtic in Tshwane tomorrow evening.

While the Brazilians’ current league position puts them well above Ajax’s current position, this is not the case for Celtic.

Phunya Sele Sele claimed a clutch 1-0 away win over Polokwane City this past weekend to move above Ajax on goal difference.

Both teams have 22 points, but the Bloemfontein side has a game in hand on the Capetonians, having played 21 times compared to the Urban Warriors’ 22.

A win for Celtic would push them three points clear of Ajax and further compact the relegation battle at the bottom of the log, with only Free State Stars, Highlands Park and Baroka FC below Stanley Menzo’s side.

Yet a win for Sundowns would see Ajax move up a position to 12th – in this scenario Celtic’s goal difference would at the very least drop to equal with Ajax’s and the Urban Warriors have scored more goals.

A draw would put Celtic just one point above Ajax, and leave them very much in the mix as far as relegation is concerned.
