Ajax Cape Town returned to Absa Premiership action with a 5-0 defeat to a rampant Bidvest Wits side, at the Bidvest Stadium in Braamfontein on Tuesday evening.
The Clever Boys moving to the top of table of the table following goals from Phakamani Mahlambi, Thulani Hlatshwayo Frank Mhango (x2) and James Keene.
As a result, Stanley Menzo’s troops slip down to 11th place on the log standings.
Tashreeq Morris conjured the first chance of the match with the Urban Warriors striker, who was called in as a late replacement for Prince Nxumalo, forcing Darren Keet into a top save in the 17th minute.
The Clever Boys, though, would grab the lead three minutes later. A defensive mistake punished as teenage forward Mahlambi pounced on the loose ball before firing a low shot into the back of the net.
Ajax Cape Town academy graduate, Hlatshwayo, doubled the hosts lead in the 31st minute. The Bidvest Wits skipper rising highest from a corner-kick before nodding the ball past Jody February who had no chance.
Bidvest Wits 2-0 Ajax Cape Town at the interval.
The Urban Warriors looked more lively after the break, but again squandered a golden chance after Morris and Ndiviwe Mdabuka failed to make Darren Keet pay after he had dropped the ball.
Mhango rose of the bench with great effect for the home side with the Malawi international finding the back of the net with his first touch of the ball. The forward left with an easy finish after February fumbled.
Keene made it 4-0 in the 62nd minute – directing a powerful header past February before Mhango completed his brace with 12 minutes remaining. More questionable defending by the visitors punished as he rifled home from close range.
February was back to his best to deny Mhango his hat-trick in the 88th minute, but in all it was a disappointing evening for Ajax Cape Town as they now set their sights on crosstown rivals Cape Town City.
