Ajax Cape Town captain Travis Graham has noted the importance of the club’s upcoming match against SuperSport United.

The Urban Warriors travel to the South African capital on Friday, ahead of our highly anticipated clash against the Absa Premiership leaders.

Graham was forced to watch from the sidelines as his teammates were held to a 1-1 draw by Kaizer Chiefs last time out; the midfielder having picked up an accumulation of yellow cards.

Rodrick Kabwe and Ndiviwe Mdabuka duly filled the gap left by Graham in midfield, with Mosa Lebusa donning the armband.

“I think they did exceptionally well [against Kaizer Chiefs], on all areas of the field – starting from the back,” said Graham. “We played as a team and I think it was really important for us to get a positive result.

“Yes, we could have taken all three points, but I think a point was good enough, especially when playing against Kaizer Chiefs in front of a full stadium.

Graham continued: “I was actually shouting and screaming in an attempt to give the team that ‘extra energy’, but at the end of the day, if one player is out the next has to fill in, and I think ‘Diva’ and Rodrick did a very good job in midfield.

“Mosa led the team very well and was named man-of-the-match. In all departments the guys were on top form.

Matsatsantsa are the latest league leaders Ajax will come up against, with the Cape side having already played against three teams to have topped the table this season, since the start of the New Year.

Following games against title contenders Bidvest Wits and Cape Town City, Stanley Menzo’s men traveled to Polokwane City to take on Rise and Shine before returning back to the Mother City to host the Amakhosi in Athlone.

“It is going to be a tough game, but especially for us, we have to take things one game at a time, playing the top teams consecutively,” Graham added.

“For us, we just have to sit down and focus on this game and make sure we get another positive result because we need to climb the log standings as well and make sure we are safe from relegation. That is what we are playing for, to try and get as much points as we can.

With important matches against teams’ fighting the same fight as the Urban Warriors to follow – starting with a match against Free State Stars on the 17th of March – Graham is hopeful that a positive result against SuperSport will be the start of a good run of results.

“I think if we are able to get a result against SuperSport it will serve as a massive confidence booster heading into the next game, Free State Stars are also battling for points and no one wants to be in the relegation zone.

“To get the points now is really important so that we don’t have to worry about that later on,” Graham concluded.

Kick-off at the Lucas Moripe Stadium in Atteridgeville on Saturday evening is scheduled for 20h15.
