Ajax Cape Town captain Travis Graham is ‘geed up from the feet up’ ahead of the Cape Town Derby clash against Cape Town City in the Mother City on Saturday evening. Kick-off at Cape Town Stadium in Green Point is scheduled for 20h15 (Match Broadcast Live on SABC 1).
The Urban Warriors will be desperate to bounce back to winning ways with victory over the Citizens, following a disappointing result away to Bidvest Wits on Tuesday evening.
“It wasn’t a good start to the New Year, but I think the boys are even more fired up to change things around as soon as possible, and we have a good opportunity now – especially now in the Derby and as we know; the Derby is a big game for the City,” Graham said on Friday.
“This is all about bragging rights for the City and we want to win this game for our fans, to make them happy and also to get the points we need.
Eric Tinkler’s troops – in contrast – head into the clash following a favourable result over Highlands Park, with the Absa Premiership newbies currently in a three-way tie atop the league standings.
Lebogang Manyama, Aubrey Ngoma, Shu-Aib Walters, Robyn Johannes, Thatho Mokeke and Tshepo Gumede are among the players to have impressed for City in their maiden campaign, and Graham has been impressed by the Ajax’s crosstown rivals.
“I think they are a well balanced side, they attack together and defend as a unit – they are a good team overall,” Graham added. “The front four especially can be very dangerous on the attack, especially on the counter-attack. We know what they are capable of so what we need to do is play as a team and make sure we work for each other.
“We have to be clinical, the team work is going to be vital for us.
Moreover, the 23-year-old has called on the Urban Warriors faithful to come out in force on Saturday evening as Ajax aim to exact revenge on City.
Graham continued: “Shout out to a the Ajax Cape Town supporters, come out in numbers – Ajax Cape Town has been in the PSL for 17 years. We want to make the fans happy by getting a good result and the 12th man is really important once we walk onto the pitch tomorrow; so we can feel the spirit from them.
“We are Ajax Cape Town and we need to do this together.
Victory in tonight’s Derby could be just what Stanley Menzo and his men need as we aim to climb up the log standings, Graham agrees…
“I think we are better than where we are on the log [at the moment]. For the next game against City- that is all out of our mind at the moment – it is a big Derby game. We want to get a good result.
“The league is very tight this season, a win will be very good for us and we will take if from there. Most importantly we must get the three points,” the midfielder concluded.
In head-to-head stats, Ajax and CTC have clashed in just one previous league match.
That encounter took place earlier this season and saw the Citizens claim a 1-0 home win thanks to a goal from Bhongolwethu Jayiya.
