Ajax Cape Town head coach Stanley Menzo is confident that hard work will pay dividends for the Urban Warriors, with six days to go to the resumption of the 2016-17 Premier Soccer League (PSL) season.
Bidvest Wits will proved the club’s first competitive test of the New Year, with the Clever Boys playing host to Ajax Cape Town in Braamfontein next Tuesday, 7 February 2017.
The Urban Warriors rounded off their mid-season preparations with a disappointing 3-0 defeat to National First Division (NFD) side Stellenbosch FC at Athlone Stadium on Tuesday, and the former Dutch international hopes the loss will serve as a valuable ‘wake up call’.
“Sometimes you need a wake up call I think, hopefully today’s [Tuesday] result serves as a wake up call,” Menzo said.
“You can say we had a good preparation, but it has to show in the matches – starting with the Bidvest Wits game. I think we had a good preparation, it was good to play on a big field, you can see we are lacking a few things.
Menzo continued: “We worked hard, lets see if we can turn that hard work into a solid performance in the league.
“We have said how we want to play, agreed how we want to play and now it is all about doing the things that we have agreed on doing, and making the right choices.
“You can play nice football, it is all about winning in football – the moment you don’t win; the way of playing will always be questioned. You have to believe in what you are doing, the way you play and try and get results as soon as possible,” the 53-year-old concluded.
