Ajax Cape Town head coach Stanley Menzo expressed relief at his team securing a first win of the year; beating Highlands Park 1-0 in a tightly contested Absa Premiership fixture on Wednesday evening.
Mark Mayambela scored the only goal of the game as the Urban Warriors secured all three points to move up to 11th spot on the log standings – five points off the bottom of the table.
“It was not our best game, but at this stage, it is all about winning and my compliments go out to the team that they fought up until the last minute,” said Menzo.
“Highlands also had their chances, at this stage, it is all about fighting. Yes we were a bit lucky today, but luck helps and today again we scored a great goal, but we stopped playing afterwards…the three points, though, are the most important.
Menzo reserved special praise for Mayambela, who put up his hand in leading Ajax Cape Town’s fight for a first win of 2017.
“Mark took responsibility, the whole week, in training and also today [Wednesday]. It is good for him, good that when you put in the effort that you get a reward for that,” Menzo continued.
“It is good that we win, finally we win in 2017, finally that feeling is gone so no more questionsabout having not won a game this year.
“Let’s enjoy this moment first, and then build up to the upcoming fixture against Golden Arrows. I am confident that we will play better and confident we can come away with a good result [in Kwa-Zulu Natal],” Menzo concluded.
