In build-up to our upcoming trip to Polokwane, we relive the past two meetings between Ajax Cape Town and Polokwane City.

Earlier this season, the two teams played to a 1-1 draw at the Cape Town Stadium in a midweek clash back in September last year.

The Urban Warriors grabbed the lead as early as the fourth minute when Nathan Paulse flicked home Thabo Mosadi’s pin-point cross.

Having controlled the early exchanges, Ajax would rue that they were unable to fully capitalise on their early dominance as Polokwane gradually asserted their control of proceedings.

Rise and Shine duly claimed an equaliser just after the hour mark when Thobani Mncwango converted a penalty. The spot kick had been awarded for a foul by Roscoe Pietersen on Puleng Tlolane and saw the Ajax defender sent off for a second bookable offence.

With 10-men, the Urban Warriors were able to hold on for a valuable draw, though they had their nervy moments, most notably when they needed goalkeeper Brandon Petersen to make a superb late save on to deny Tlolane.

Moreover, in the corresponding fixture last season, the Urban Warriors claimed a 3-2 win over their counterparts at the Old Peter Mokaba Stadium on the 20th of February 2016.

Prince Nxumalo emerged as the hero for the Cape side, bagging a second-half brace to take his goal tally up to 10 for the season.

Erwin Isaacs had opened the scoring for Roger de Sa’s men with Nxumalo doubling the visitors advantage before Jabulani Maluleke pulled a goal back for the Limpopo side.

Nxumalo completed his brace shortly after before defender Lawrence Lartey received his marching orders. Maluleke netted his second in injury time, but it was too little too late for Rise and Shine as Ajax claimed all three points to at that time move up to seventh on the log standings.

The next meeting between to two sides is scheduled for Saturday 18 February 2017, with kick-off at the Peter Mokaba Stadium set for 15h30.
