Ajax lose season opener

Ajax Cape Town lost their season opener against Orlando Pirates when Benson Mhlongo stole in at the far post four minutes after the restart.
The game started with Ajax on the attack in search of an early goal.

Their play almost paid off as Thulani Serero missed a sitter when he misjudged the flight of the ball with the Pirates keeper stranded out of position. The game swung from and to end as both teams played flowing attacking football to the delight of the more than 20 00 fans who packed the stadium.

Pirates had their first scoring opportunity in the 15th minute when Mhlongo his volley flew wide of the target.

Both teams traded punches but could not add to the score line.

For Ajax Dipsy Selolwane, Serero and Hlatshwayo found their efforts foiled. For Pirates Mthembu, Jali and Mashego failed to find the target.
Late in the second half Jali clipped the heels of Franklin Cale however all the Ajax appeals were turned down by the match official. Then Moeneeb Josephs made a great save off a Lance Davids scorcher to deny the Urban Warriors a share of the points.

Ajax plays Free State Stars in their second league game of the season on August 19, 2009 at the Goble Park.
