Positive vibes, that is all head coach Stanley Menzo has been interested in as Ajax Cape Town gear for what they hope will be their first win of the year when they take on Highlands Park; in an Absa Premiership clash on Wednesday evening.
Kick-off at Cape Town Stadium is set for 19h30 CAT.
The Urban Warriors have looked good in training all week, according to Menzo and the Dutch tactician is optimistic that his troops will come out on top against a stubborn Lions of the North outfit.
“It was a good week, very good training session – a good spirit,” said Menzo. “We hope that we can have that same spirit on Wednesday and if we do I am sure we will get the three points.
“It is a team difficult to beat, they only lose 1-0 or 2-1 so they always stay in the game. Not a big football playing team, but a team with some qualities in set-pieces, in runs – a team that plays very direct so yes, I think they will let us have the ball and we will have to set the tempo.
A lack of clean sheets has been a presisting problem, admits Menzo, but the former Ajax Amsterdam shot-stopper believes there is more to what meets the eye…
“It’s the whole team’s issue that we haven’t had a clean sheet in a long time,” Menzo added. “The moment you don’t score, it puts a lot more pressure on your defence and goalkeeper. So it is a concern, as a clean sheet means at least one point.
“But I also look at my team offensively, where we create chances – and the moment you score, the game changes. But if the opponents score their one chance, the game changes and you have to run at them again.
“So defensively it hasn’t been good, but it’s been said ‘As long as you score one goal more than your opponent, you will win’. So it’s both sides – we’ve let in too many easy goals, and don’t score enough,” he concluded.
