Ajax Cape Town starlet Grant Margeman has featured in both South Africa’s games at the ongoing 2017 Under-20 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) finals in Zambia.
Nicknamed Amajita, SA U20 registered an impressive 3-1 victory over their Cameroonian counterparts in their first Group B game in Ndola on Monday.
Promising midfielder Margeman was one of the South African players who caught the eye on the day, and he was substituted with five minutes left on the clock.
Amajita’s next game was against another West African side, Senegal, who had drawn their first Group B game against Sudan on Monday.
Margeman was named among the Amajita substitutes, but he was introduced in the 66th with Senegal leading 3-2.
The Young Lions of Teranga then extended their lead five minutes later, but Amajita were able to make it 4-3 with less than nine minutes left on the clock.
Margeman had a chance to snatch a late equalizer for Amajita in stoppage time, but unfortunately he was denied by the goalkeeper, who ensured that Senegal won 4-3 on the day.
Margeman and his Amajita teammates still have a chance to book their place in the semi-finals of the youth continental competition.
A win over Sudan in their final Group B game on Sunday, will see Amajita not only reach the last four, but also qualify for the 2017 FIFA Under-20 World Cup finals in South Korea.
Ajax Cape Town defender Aghmat Ridhaa Ceres is yet to feature for Amajita in the tournament.
