It has been officially confirmed that Ikamva, Ajax Cape Town’s Parow base, will host the 2017 Strandfontein AFC Under-13 Tournament.
The ‘tournament by the sea’, which is annually hosted at the Strandfontein Sports Complex will be played at the Urban Warriors’ grounds this coming weekend; Saturday 25 March – Sunday 26 March.
Gate fee: Adults R10.00 and Kids R5.00
The event organizers released the following statement earlier this week:
This was not an easy decision to make; and we were very lucky to secure an alternative venue; with less than a week to go before our tournament.
Many things were taken into consideration before going this route.
Below is some additional information, detailing the reasons why the decision had to be taken:
Our tournament venue, Strandfontein Sports Complex, is in a dismal state because of the water restrictions and lack of proactive steps by Council to keep our playing surfaces safe and maintained.
We had endless meetings, emails & correspondence with our LFA, Council & all stakeholders (including an escalation to SAFA) regarding our complex for the past few weeks, to try to keep the tourney by the sea. One important note: The tournament is moving to Parow, BUT ONLY for the 2017 season.
Next year, we will focus even harder on all things, even those out of our control, to ensure another successful tournament by the sea (in 2018)
Moreover, it has been confirmed that Spur Corporation will also be at the tournament selling some food.
Furthermore, this is the 18th year that the tournament will be hosted, with the tourney boasting a rich history of players from Strandfontein AFC having gone on to play at Absa Premiership, NFD and ABC Motsepe League level.
To name a few: Clint Fredericks (Ajax), Jody February (Ajax) and Robyn Johannes (Cape Town City).
A total of 24 teams will compete this year as it’s only a two day tournament.
Previous winners over the past four years: Fish Hoek (2013), Ajax Cape Town (2014) Old Mutual (2015) and Maties (2016).
