In our inaugural ‘From the Fans’ segment, we spoke to Ajax Cape Town die-hard Gavin Frank ‘IG’ Ebden.
Gavin, who turned 56 years-old earlier this week, hails from Strandfontein and has been an Urban Warriors supporter since the club’s inception in 1999.
His favourite current Ajax Cape Town players are Jody February and Grant Margeman, with Thulani Serero going down as his favourite former player at the Cape club.
The casual Ajax Cape Town red shirt is his favourite piece of merchandise and you will be able to spot him donning the famous colours on every matchday – home matches and sometimes even on our travels. (The above picture was actually taken following the MTN8 semifinal win over Bidvest Wits in Braamfontein two years ago).
The 2016-17 season has been a roller-coaster of emotions for the Urban Warriors, how would you sum it up?
It has been one of our most inconsistent seasons ever. We’ve struggled to build a solid combination and the change of coach, and injuries has also affected our players’ form. The long mid-season break and the international breaks has not been kind to us as well.
Who do you think have been the standout players at the club this season and why?
Mark Mayambela has been the standout player as well as Magerman. Mayambela takes players on and is a confident player with lots of skill and packs a powerful punch for a shot as well.
What message do of support do you have for head coach Stanley Menzo?
I love the energy confidence he has brought to the team. The coach must keep doing what he’s doing and not be swayed by other voices around him during matches.
What message of support do you have for the boys ahead of our next match vs Maritzburg United?
They must go out there and play for each other and for all our supporters, especially Mr Balls (who sadly passed away recently).
A lion is not scared of its prey.
We still haven’t forgotten how the Team of Choice stopped us from taking the PSL league five years ago, that’s all the motivation our brave Warriors need.
