Ajax Cape Town duo Aghmat Ridhaa Ceres and Grant Margeman have been included in the South African National U20 squad for the 2017 CAF U20 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournament, set to take place in Zambia from 26 February 2017 – 12 March 2017.
Head coach Thabo Senong on Monday afternoon made public his 21-man squad for the showpiece, with six days to go before proceedings kick-off in the Southern African country.
Amajita have been seeded in Group B, alongside Senegal, Cameroon and Sudan. South Africa will play their games in Ndola while Group A, which consists of tournament hosts Zambia, Egypt, Mali and Guinea, will play their matches in the capital Lusaka.
The four top teams from the tournament will automatically qualify for the 2017 FIFA U20 World Cup which will take place in South Korea from 20 May – 11 June 2017.
“We are going to a tough tournament so it is imperative that we take our strongest players. We have managed to assess the players in the matches against Zambia last week and Mali on Sunday and this is our final squad and I am happy with it,” Senong is quoted as saying in a statement released by SAFA.
“They (the players) understand what is expected of them in the tournament and we have set objectives for this team. We are happy that the players have experience with some coming from the U17 national set up, some from the COSAFA Cup played last year and others from the U23 set up; therefore we are confident going into the tournament,” Senong concluded.
Everyone at Ajax Cape Town would like to congratulate the Urban Warriors duo, who are set to fly the club’s flag on the continental stage.
