In build-up to the Cape Town Derby set to take place at Cape Town Stadium this Saturday, 11 February, Ajax Cape Town hosted the media at Cubana’s in Green Point – where we shared our vision for the remainder of the 2016-17 Premier Soccer League campaign.
In attendance was former Urban Warriors midfielder Brent Carelse. The 35-year-old highlighted the rich history of the Cape Derby with the Ajax Cape Town legend anxiously waiting to see what transpires in the Mother City this Saturday.
Ajax Cape Town and Cape Town City will face off for only the second time, with the latter having claimed a 1-0 victory in the reverse fixture earlier this season.
Carelse believes that Cape Town has always nurtured the best talent, with Ajax Cape Town having set the benchmark over the past 17 years.
“I am really excited, I support local football a lot,” Carelse said. “I think Cape Town as a city has always produced the best talent in South Africa – without a doubt, from Mark Williams’ days.
“We have a point to prove in terms of staying up there, trying to challenge for the league year in, year out. The Cape Town teams will get there eventually, when we hold on to our best players.
“The Cape Derby has a rich history, dating back to Spurs and Hellenic. There is a great rivalry. We play for pride more than anything else and I am looking forward to a great game this weekend.
“Playing in a the Cape Town derby is very emotional. It’s one of the best games to play in,” Carelse concluded.
Kick-off on Saturday is scheduled for 20h15.
