Ajax Cape Town suffer Nedbank Cup upset in Clermont

KwaDukuza United coughed up the first Nedbank Cup upset of the season as they defeated Ajax Cape Town 4-3 on penalties at the Sugar Ray Xulu Stadium in Clermont on Saturday afternoon.

The game was deadlocked at 2-2 after 120 minutes of football.

Neo Makua, drafted into the First Team for the first time this year, opened the scoring as early as the first minute with the winger finding the back of the net with 30 seconds on the clock.

Despite suffering the early setback, the ‘Black Jaguars’ proved their metal as they hit back on 10 minutes. Mthabela finding a way past Brandon Petersen in the Urban Warriors goal.

Chances would continue to come at either end with both teams unable to add to their tally before the interval.

Prince Nxumalo restored the visitors lead in the 67th minute. The Durban-born striker with a clinical finish on his return to the starting line-up.

But, Ajax’ lead wouldn’t last long once more as Madela pulled the sides level four minutes later.

Aubrey Funga, Nathan Paulse and Abel Mabaso had chances to win it for the visitors in regulation time, but with no further goals forthcoming the game would head into an extra 30 minutes.

Both teams had their chances to win the match in extra-time, but ultimately the game would be decided from the penalty spot.

KwaDukuza United, who ply their trade in the ABC Motsepe League, duly booking their place in the Round of 16 after Erick Chipeta and Nxumalo missed from 12 yards.
